About UHS

Posted on January 13, 2012

Universal Health Services (UHS) is a massive, Fortune 500 hospital conglomerate that operates over 200 hospitals, schools, detention facilities, etc. in 38 States plus Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands. Based in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, 176 of its facilities are “behavioral health.” UHS’ relentless push for profit has led to a long history of serious human rights violations.

Financial Statistics

UHS’ most recent earnings report shows that the company took in $85.1 million in profit in the 3rd Quarter of Fiscal Year 2011. The most profitable part of UHS is its behavioral health division, which earned $847.42 million in net revenue in the Quarter – a 6.8% increase from the Third Quarter of 2010. In this business, an ‘Operating Margin’ (ratio of operating income to total revenue) of 2-3% is considered “healthy.” UHS’ Behavioral Health hospitals reported a 26.2 percent operating margin this quarter.

Net revenues increased 40% to $1.85 billion during the third quarter of 2011; compared to $1.32 billion during the third quarter of 2010. (The increase is partly due to UHS’ purchase of the Psychiatric Services, Inc. chain.)

In the nine-month period ending September 30, 2011, UHS’ behavioral health facilities admitted over 270,000 people. Patients spent 3.9 million days at these units. The average daily census was 14,333, and average length of stay was 14.5 days.
